New: the goodbye jar
For people who are leaving. They will not miss the country — they will miss five specific things in it.
We have added something for the ones who are moving away.
When people emigrate they do not lie awake missing a country. They miss the particular bread from the bakery on the corner. The sound the tram makes on that one bend. The salt. A colour the light goes in October that it does not go anywhere else.
So we stopped trying to summarise a country. The goodbye jar holds five small, specific things from the city someone is leaving, chosen from what you tell us about them, sealed in glass with a list of what each one is.
Why this one took a while
The hard part was never the objects. It was resisting the urge to be comprehensive. An early version had eleven things in it and felt like a duty-free shop. Five things that are exactly right beat eleven that are merely from the right place.
